Lysozyme Hydrochloride as a Natural Antiviral Agent against Foot-and-Mouth Disease
Lysozyme Hydrochloride, a naturally occurring egg-white protein, has been investigated for its potential as a biologically safe antiviral solution in animal healthcare. Recent research demonstrated that heat-denatured lysozyme can partially inactivate foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) in vitro, exhibiting a dose-dependent reduction of viral infectivity.
At concentrations between 0.5% and 2%, heat-treated lysozyme achieved reductions of up to 3 log₁₀ TCID₅₀ in specific FMDV strains (e.g. O/JPN/2010-1/14C). Furthermore, decreases in viral RNA loads were observed across multiple serotypes, including O/Taiwan/1997, Asia1, and SAT1-3. Nevertheless, some strains remained resistant, indicating that lysozyme should be considered as an adjunctive, natural disinfectant, not a substitute for conventional biocides.
Given its GRAS status and natural origin, Lysozyme Hydrochloride presents an attractive candidate for improving livestock biosecurity programmes while maintaining food-chain safety.
Bioseutica® goes circular! Opportunities for West III program grant
Bioseutica® is actively pursuing new product developments in feed additives, enzymes, animal health, and nutrition products. These new products make up the Animal Nutrition division of Bioseutica. Currently, Bioseutica®’s Animal Nutrition division comprises the following solutions:

Bioseutica® spearheads a project to craft an innovative lysozyme product, a bioactive protein tailored for the feed industry. This endeavor involves extracting lysozyme from residual feed streams. Dubbed Technical Lysozyme, this product will be manufactured within a circular framework that maximizes the utilization of valuable protein sources for the feed industry. The initiative receives financial support from the European Union through the EFRO program Opportunities for West III, which is dedicated to advancing the transition toward a fully circular and climate-neutral economy. A key milestone for this program is set for 2030, marking significant progress toward its overarching goals.
